Does Acupuncture work?

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years, but its effectiveness is also supported by a growing body of modern research. According to the British Acupuncture Council, acupuncture can help regulate the nervous system, improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and support the body’s natural healing processes. Their clinical evidence summaries show benefits for a wide range of conditions, including pain, headaches, fertility, and stress‑related symptoms.

Independent research groups such as Evidence Based Acupuncture also highlight strong findings for acupuncture’s impact on chronic pain, migraines, menstrual health, and emotional wellbeing. Their reviews show that acupuncture often performs as well as — and sometimes better than — conventional treatments, with fewer side effects. NICE currently advises acupuncture in cases of Chronic pain, and acupuncture is used within our NHS.

In clinic, we see that acupuncture works best when it is individualised. Rather than treating a symptom in isolation, we look at your whole pattern: your lifestyle, stress levels, sleep, digestion, hormones, and the deeper imbalances that may be contributing to your symptoms. This whole‑body approach is why so many people experience meaningful, lasting change.

Alice Douglas, the clinical lead and director, is personally involved in postgraduate acupuncture research. This means she ensures her team are always evidence informed.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most people are surprised by how gentle acupuncture feels. The needles are extremely fine — much thinner than those used for injections or blood tests — and many patients barely feel them at all. Sensations can include a soft heaviness, warmth, tingling, or a gentle dull ache, all of which are normal signs that the body is responding.

The British Acupuncture Council emphasises that acupuncture is safe when performed by a fully trained practitioner. As BAcC‑registered acupuncturists, our team uses high‑quality, single‑use sterile needles and adapts every treatment to your comfort level. If you are nervous, we go slowly, explain each step, and use the lightest possible techniques.

For those who prefer even gentler approaches, we can use non‑needle methods such as acupressure, moxibustion, or very shallow needling. Your comfort is always the priority.
